De Beukelaer’s Fabrieken. Foto’s, film en objecten uit 1925 en 2015
In het kader van ‘Antwerpen Koekenstad’ opende dit weekend in het Letterenhuis een interessante tentoonstelling over de geschiedenis van koekjesfabrikant De Beukelaer.
Het bedrijf werd in 1870 opgericht door Edward de Beukelaer, een jonge bakker uit Antwerpen. De Beukelaer was de eerste industriële koekjesproducent op het Europese vasteland en werd tot ver buiten de landsgrenzen bekend. De fabriek was bijna honderd jaar actief in het centrum van de stad, gaf duizenden Antwerpenaars werk en verleidde alle passanten met zijn heerlijke zoete geuren. In de jaren zestig verhuisde de fabriek naar Herentals. Tot op de dag van vandaag is ze de grootste koekjesfabriek in Europa. Sinds 2012 gebeurt dat onder de vlag van Mondelēz International, de nieuwe naam van Kraft Foods.
De expo toont de smakelijke erfenis die Edward de Beukelaer en zijn familie nalieten met een schat aan documentatie, foto’s en andere memorabilia uit de archieven van het bedrijf. Reclameplaten, wikkels en koekendozen laten zien hoe Biscuits De Beukelaer de smaak van de tijd op de voet volgt.
Een nooit eerder vertoonde fotoreeks en filmdocumentaire uit de jaren twintig, gemaakt in de toenmalige fabriek bij het Centraal Station van Antwerpen, nemen de bezoeker van de expo mee terug in de tijd. Fotograaf Jimmy Kets werkte een week lang in de koekjesfabriek in Herentals en confronteert zijn hedendaagse foto’s en film met het historische archiefmateriaal.
Bij de tentoonstelling verscheen ook een publicatie die voor 20 euro te koop is in de Stadswinkel. Heel wat materiaal werd ook verzameld op de website erfgoedpareindebeukelaer.weebly.com.
Momenteel lopen nog twee andere tentoonstellingen in het kader van ‘Antwerpen Koekenstad’. Op de binnenkoer van het ADVN tonen panelen de historiek van twee eeuwen Antwerpse industriële en ambachtelijke confiserie-, biscuit-, koekjes- en chocoladeproductie, en in het kijkdepot van het MAS wordt dan weer de collectie-Parein in de kijker gezet.
